Hurricane Categories

Hurricane season begins June 1 and will last until Nov. 1.

Categories include:
  • One: 74-95 mph winds, up to 7-foot tides. All mobile home parks, keys and coastal areas of elevations of less than 7 feet above sea level must evacuate. Damage is likely to landscaping and mobile homes.
  • Two: 96-110 mph winds, 12-foot tides; coastal areas of less than 12 feet above sea level must evacuate. Expect some downed tress and damage to roofing, signs, mobile homes, windows and doors.
  • Three: 111-130 mph winds, 14-foot tides; coastal areas of elevations of less than 14 feet must evacuate. Same damage as above but with additional structural damage to small buildings. Mobile homes will probably be destroyed.
  • Four: 131-155 mph winds, 20-foot tides; all above areas plus coastal areas at less than 20 feet must evacuate. Extensive roofing damage, windows and doors, failure of roofs at small homes.
  • Five: 156 mph and above, tides at more than 20 feet; all areas at less than 21 feet must evacuate. Damage to doors, windows, roofs and industrial buildings. Some complete building failures. Small buildings overturned or blown away.
