Have ready to take ...
Wherever you decide to seek refuge during a hurricane evacuation, plan to take provisions with you. The following suggested items will make your temporary stay more comfortable:
- Food (canned goods and nonperishable foods) that do not need cooking.
- Drinking Water in nonbreakable containers (2 quarts per person per day).
- Special Dietary Food if required.
- Identification, valuable tapes, policies and photographs in a waterproof container.
- Personal Hygiene items, such as soap, deodorant, shampoo, toothbrush, toothpaste, aspirin, antacid, diapers, washcloth, towels, etc.
- Utensils, such as manual can opener, disposable plates, cups, forks, knives, spoons, napkins, etc.
- Prescription Medications at least a two weeks' supply.
- Personal Aids, such as eyeglasses, hearing aids, prosthetic devices, etc.
- Entertainment such as books, magazines, cards, toys and games.
- Infant Care items such as baby formula, baby food, disposable diapers.
- Radio, battery-operated with extra batteries.
- Flashlight or lantern with extra batteries.
- First Aid Kit which includes: betadine solution, gauze bandages, adhesive tape, sterile pads, bandages, safety scissors, non-prescription medication.
- Bedding such as sleeping bag, cot, blanket, sheet, pillow.
- Clothing extra change of dry clothing especially for infants.
- Cash, banks may be damaged or destroyed or may be inoperable if electricity is out. Many stores may not accept checks or credit cards.
Remember, alcoholic beverages, pets and weapons are not allowed inside emergency public shelters.
